Rotations

During the last sessions on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays the neighbourhood are involved in learning rotations. The rotations consist of guided reading and independent reading as well as borrowing in the library, ICT workshops in the library and maths projects in the neighbourhood.

The ICT workshops are currently involving the exploration of the Ultranet and personalising the children's pages. During the library sessions, the students are using shared text to focus on strategies that efficient readers use. During the maths projects sessions the students are exploring the concepts and understandings of space including symmetry, shape characteristics and transformation.

Story Maps

This term the Grade 2 Neighbourhood is learning that good readers and good writers understand and use story structure such as problem and resolution in narratives. In our first workshop, groups read a big book and then created a story map to show the problems and resolutions that took place throughout the story. Here is the story map of Silly Willy. In Silly Willy the main character faced complication after complication, but the story ended with a happy resolution.

Book Talk

Every Wednesday the Grade 2 Neighbourhood will be reading, listening to and discussing stories.

Parents who are interested in leading groups of children in these book talks are invited to see Jessica, Rita or Ethan by Friday, 13th May. You will need to be available on Wednesday mornings between 9 - 10. We are discussing the idea of having a roster for the book talks, so you do not need to be available every Wednesday.

Thank you to all of the parents and friends who participated in story time last week. Both teachers and students thoroughly enjoyed all of your stories.

Story Time

Next week we will be beginning a new enquiry topic that is related to storytelling.

We are inviting parents, grandparents and other special guests to share a story book with the neighbourhood. Each day next week there will be two 15 minute sessions from 9:00 - 9:15am and 3:15 - 3:30pm where you will be invited to read a narrative that is special to you.

If you are interested and are available during any of these times, there will be a timetable outside the learning areas where you can write your name in a preferred time slot.

Further information regarding these wonderful literacy sharing times will be sent home tomorrow.

We look forward to celebrating our learning with you.

The Zimmer Twins

This week in our afternoon ICT sessions the students have been using the website, The Zimmer Twins. It is great for supporting children in video editing and literacy.

Wordle

This week the children will do a word study on adjectives (describing words). They will use Wordle to publish their findings. Here is one I did about myself.
