Excursion to the State Library of Victoria
By Alice Mackie

On Tuesday we went on an excursion, we got a tram. It was called tram tram number 8. First we went to look at the books. I saw ‘Are we there yet?’ first. Second we went to the real library. After we went to the play area. I did drawing. I was in Guy’s group with Wil, Eunice. Eliza and Samson. The roof was very big and pretty. I loved how it was in a dome shape. It was getting late, it was time to go. The number of the tram was number 1 this time. The tram back was very squishy. Me and Jasmine kept bumping together. It was very late, the bell had already gone when we got back. The parents were already here when we got back. My dad picked me up. After I went to my house.

On sunny Tuesday we went to the Look Exhibition. We went by tram. My group teacher was Leigh. On the tram, our group was one of the first groups. When we got there Rosie’s mum Kathryn took out bags. Just before that we took out our readers and writers notebook. The first 3 groups that went on the first tram had to wait for the other three groups. When we had all got there we had a play out the front. Finally we went in. At the doors there were two security guards. In my group there was Maddox, Charles, Jane-Rose, Jasmine, Nida and I. First we went to see the illustrations. I liked the picture from The Hidden Forrest. At the exhibition the picture was 3D. Then we went past people who were studying. We had to be very quiet. We then went to the series of The Waterhole. I wrote in my readers and writers notebook about one rhino drinking at the waterhole. The rhino is very detailed. Two tigers drinking at the waterhole. In the background there are animals blending into the jungle, such as an elephant blending into roots of a tree. Next we went on a lift up to level four. There was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. Then we went back outside to have a snack. I had a muesli bar. We had one minute to eat. Then we went back into the library. We went to the play pod section. I did reading, drawing and wii, then the teacher clapped his hands and he said “We have to pack up and go back on to the tram.”  On the way home, for no reason we met up with Samson’s mum, Leah. So we had an extra helper. When we got back to school it was home time. I went straight to netball training.

Yesterday I went on an excursion to the Look exhibition. We went on the tram. We left at 12:00. We were put into groups of 6. When we got to the State Library we all went into our groups. The group that I was in was guided by Sharna. First Sharna’s group went up to the 4th floor. We got to see lots and lots of old books. We took our reader’s and writer’s notebooks. Sey harna asked us to draw 2 columns. The first column for ‘I think’ the second column for ‘I see’. After the library of old books and people studying, we moved on to the Look exhibition. The pictures were divine. We had to find the book we chose for ‘Book Talk’ on Wednesday. I found my book it is called ‘To The Top End’. The illustration was done in ink and water colour. I wrote the most interesting fact and what the picture told me. The story was written my Roland Harvey. Afterwards we had a snack outside the State Library. We had a 5 minuet snack  then later we went back inside to see Graham Base’s illustrations of ‘The Waterhole’. His illustrations of the Waterhole were beautiful in each picture. We caught the tram back to school and we went in 3 groups. I really enjoyed my day.

On Tuesday I knew it was going to be amazing. We went on an excursion at the State Library. I had to look for the book ‘The Top End’. I looked for ‘The Top End’ it was pretty hard. Finally I found it. Then we went out of the reading area. We also went up stairs and I spotted an awesome mirror. After we had a look around finally I got to eat. We rushed back in the library and had a play. Oh I forgot that we saw the Waterhole and it’s amazing pictures. We went out of the play area and went back to school. We went to school on the tram at about 2pm.

I smell...
I see...
I taste...
I feel...
I hear...

Here are some examples from the students:

I hear the loud guns firing,
I see the ancient pyramids crumbling,
I smell the tearing skin,
I feel the hot sand,
I taste the fuming smoke and not a drop of water.
By James

I see the beautiful blue sea,
I feel the cool water lapping at my feet,
I hear the seagulls squawking,
I taste the salty cool air,
I smell the beautiful warm sand.

I feel the ice melting in my hand,
I smell the cold ice,
I see the cold snow,
I taste the cold snow,
I hear the wolves howl.

I see happy kids playing,
I taste my yummy lunch,
I feel the cold bars as I do tricks on the play ground,
I hear the happy kids laughing on the play ground.
